A videogame developer is to establish a headquarters in Derry following its take-over by US firm Riot Games.

Hypixel Studios is led by Derry men Aaron Noxy Donaghey and Sean McCafferty and is behind the upcoming title Hytale, which allows players to go on adventures in a block-based fantasy world.

Mr Donaghy said when the question of location for the company arose, he had no doubt where that should be.

“Many members of our team have enjoyed visiting the city over the years and, as a base to develop many of our team’s functions, it has both the talent pool and, more importantly, the spark of hunger necessary to ignite creativity.”

Richard Williams of Northern Ireland Screen, which is supporting the new office, said Hypixel and Riot Games could do for the games sector in the north what HBO and Game of Thrones did for television drama.

“We are in no doubt that this hard-won next step for Aaron and Sean is hugely important for the video games sector in Northern Ireland.”

Derry mayor Michaela Boyle said: “The games industry is huge and to have a company of this stature establishing itself in the city is fantastic news.”
